I recently visited Flax Pen to Paper near UCLA, and it was a fantastic experience! The store is quite roomy, which I really appreciated—it gives you space to browse comfortably without feeling crowded. They have an impressive selection of gorgeous pens, all beautifully displayed, making it easy to browse and compare. I was particularly drawn to their collection of Japanese stationery, which is thoughtfully curated and high-quality. I attended a stationery meetup with some friends, and the event was well-organized, which added to the overall enjoyment. I couldn’t resist picking up a few TWSBIs while I was there. Definitely a must-visit for stationery lovers!

Still slowly trudging through my #StationaryStoreDay crawl. Living in the IE and making a commitment to get out to patronize these shops but I do what I can. Went in on 8.17.24 (a Saturday).

What a treat for the students and residents surrounding the UCLA campus to have such a place near. Pens, Greeting Cards, Wrapping Paper, Journals, Notebooks, gift items for children, Card sets, candles etc.

Service was chill. It's a cute little shop and I like it that they allow you to try the pens with the different journals to write in. Not all stationery stores allow you to do this.

They also have a private area to which I believe they will do invitation consultation. BTW we parked in the Whole's Food free lot and walked down to the shop.

I absolutely love this store! It’s a fountain pen enthusiast’s dream, with an incredible selection of brands like Pelikan, Lamy, Visconti, Pilot, Namiki, and even Schon Dsgn. If you’re looking for high-end pens, this is one of the best places in Los Angeles. They have Namiki Emperors, Pelikan M1000s, Pilot Urushis, and more.

One of my favorite aspects is the ability to test pens before purchasing. Preferences for nib feel and ink flow are so personal, and Flex allows you to dip test nibs with black ink before you buy. This makes the buying process so much more reassuring, especially for higher-end purchases. They also host fantastic events throughout the year, like nib-grinding sessions and sales for Fountain Pen Day, where many pens are discounted.

Their variety of pens and paper is fantastic. I love browsing the paper samples and trying different pens from my wish list. Being able to test nibs and paper in-store is a huge plus, and it’s part of the reason I’m willing to pay a bit more here than at online retailers. Yes, the prices are slightly higher, but I don’t mind supporting a physical store with friendly, knowledgeable staff. If I’m spending $700+ on a Visconti, I want the confidence that it writes as expected — and Flex provides that assurance.

One area where I wish they would improve is ink samples. While they have an extensive collection of full-size bottled inks, they don’t offer sample vials like some other fountain pen shops do. It would be great if they introduced a sample program so customers could test inks before committing to a full bottle.

I also have to shout out the store owner, Jeremy. He’s incredibly friendly and helpful. When I mentioned my interest in higher-end pens, he took the time to walk me through the options, letting me handle pens like the Pelikan M1000 and Pilot Urushi. It made the experience feel personal and thoughtful, which you just don’t get when shopping online.

If you’re a fountain pen lover, this store is an absolute gem. The ability to test pens, the warm community vibe, and the knowledgeable staff make it worth every penny.

Checked out Flax this afternoon on a few recommendations online, and I can wholeheartedly agree with the beaming reviews that they are given.

Jeremy and his staff (I didn't catch their name!) were amazingly friendly, knowledgeable and were more than happy to answer all of my silly, small questions as a first time pen buyer.

They have a huge selection of pens, inks and paper products, all of which were excellently presented. I was shown a range of pens spanning from entry level to where I set my budget, and slightly above, for comparison purposes. Every question I asked was answered professionally and there was absolutely no upsell/salesman ick when it came to choosing the pen that was right for me.

We will definitely be going back, mostly because we were told that sometimes there's a dog that comes to work with Jeremy.. the helpfulness and kindness are also a nice little cherry on top.

I will echo everyone else's reviews here, but I was traveling and decided to stop by, and I'm very glad I did!

I'm pretty experienced with fountain pens, but I met Laurie who was very helpful and helped me pick out some papers I hadn't tried before.

I also bet Jeremy the owner, and we had a nice chat about the pen industry, and our favorite pens and pen makers.

I wound up trying a Nahvalur pen and liked it enough to pick it up, along with my pads and paper.

Even though I've used fountain pens for years, I would be very comfortable there as a newbie to the hobby, since the staff was so warm and welcoming.

Next time I'm back in LA, I will no doubt stop in!

It is such a joy to walk around an actual store and look at all of their beautiful stationary and pens and just other interesting things. They were soooo kind to my 6 year old and even gave him a starter pen because he was so interested in everything around. A+ service and knowledge.

😍 I left this shop with a much needed smile. It was a pleasure to visit and the gift wrapping is impeccable. If you are in Los Angeles / Westwood this place is a must see! This store has so many amazing items that really need to be appreciated in person. This is a shopping experience at its very best.
