This is a custom wedding ring made by Bunny Bedi at Made in Earth. The inside of the ring is my grandpa's wedding ring, and the outside is a custom gold and oxidized silver ring. After working on several custom designs that involved a little more cutting and reshaping, I saw a similar oxidized ring in the Venice store and said "that, but with grandpa's ring on the inside" and Bunny made it happen.

Speaking with Bunny, he was very upfront about the process and technical challenges. He even told me that working with an heirloom ring, working with my own gold as opposed to just taking the ring and using new, fresh gold ... he shouldn't do it, there's no professional gain in doing so. Most jewelers I spoke to shared that sentiment: it's unheard of to remake someone else's ring into a new thing because there are impurities and such, and that was the end of my business with them as I was dead set on using my grandpa's ring but customized closer to my tastes. BUT Bunny recognized the emotional weight of using my grandpa's ring, given to me by my grandma when she passed two years ago, and wanted to take on the challenge so he could be part of that story for my wedding. When it finally arrived, he made a point to show me that the only part that wrapped around my finger would be my grandpa's ring, and that means a lot.

It wasn't a perfect process - a lot of back of forth with me, the scared client afraid of sending an heirloom away to potentially be ruined - but I am very happy with the results. It looks fantastic in the sun and, even though it came back a size too large it was resized (in Australia!) quickly and, to make up for the error, they even offered me a discounted ring to wear in the meantime.

Everyone who has seen the ring in person, especially in bright light where it really shines, has said how beautiful it is, and I loved working with someone who recognized the emotional significance of this task and was excited to take it on while also respecting my fears and decisions in the process.
