A Liability, Not a Sanctuary: A Medical Professional's Review of the Center of Hope

As a physician practicing within this community, I write this review not out of malice, but out of profound professional obligation and escalating concern. The mission statement of the Center of Hope implies support, ministry, and care. The reality, observed firsthand through repeated patient encounters, is a dangerous cocktail of institutional indifference to critical medical needs, organizational ineptitude, and an unacceptable public health risk. The Center of Hope, in its current operation, is borderline a liability and actively obstructs genuine community service.

Systemic Indifference to Critical Health Needs

The most egregious failure of the Center of Hope is its shocking indifference to the basic medical requirements of its members, many of whom are inherently vulnerable and high-risk. We consistently see preventable health crises—hypertensive emergencies, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe withdrawal—escalating to emergency room visits, incurring massive, avoidable costs to the public system.

The programs appear to operate under the assumption that spiritual care is a substitute for medical oversight. They lack fundamental protocols for:

Medication Management: There is no verifiable system for storing, monitoring, or ensuring compliance with prescription medications, leading to dangerous polypharmacy or abrupt discontinuation of critical life-saving drugs (e.g., insulin, heart medications).

Symptom Triage: Staff, lacking even basic first aid or mental health training, frequently misidentify or dismiss severe symptoms. We have received members presenting with clear signs of stroke, sepsis, or acute psychosis who were reportedly told to "pray it away" before being brought to the hospital by concerned peers.

Contagion Control: In a congregate living environment, the failure to implement basic, accessible health screenings for communicable diseases (respiratory illnesses, dermatological conditions) is an ethical failure and a catastrophic public health oversight.

This negligence demonstrates a deep-seated contempt for evidence-based care. The center is failing its members by prioritizing superficial adherence to doctrine over physical well-being.

A Drain on Community Resources

The claim that this ministry is "serving the community" is demonstrably false when viewed through the lens of resource allocation. Instead of functioning as a pathway to stability, the Center of Hope acts as a revolving door, creating an unnecessary administrative burden and fiscal drain on local hospitals and social services.

By allowing chronic conditions to destabilize and failing to establish clear, professional referral pathways to free clinics or mental health services, the Center of Hope effectively offloads its operational failures onto the emergency infrastructure. Every preventable ER visit is a failure of their program—a failure that costs taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars and crucially diverts attention and resources away from genuine emergencies.

The organization, in its current structure, is not a philanthropic asset; it is a clinical black hole that absorbs vulnerable individuals and spits them out in medically fragile states, demanding intensive resources they should never have required.

Conclusion: Oversight is Mandatory

The Center of Hope's operational model, which substitutes qualified care with spiritual platitudes and ignores basic standards of medical practice, is not sustainable, moral, or legal. Given the clear pattern of neglect and the potential for severe patient harm, the organization’s current operations represent a clear liability. Immediate, mandatory independent oversight by public health officials and licensed social workers is required. Failing immediate, demonstrable, and structural reform of their health and safety protocols, this institution must be restricted from housing vulnerable individuals.

It was 2 months and 20 days after checking in to the program that I was allowed to go to a free clinic in Anniston, Alabama. Turns out I had an enlarged prostate and kidney infection. Along with anemia and high blood pressure. Taking someone to the free clinic, St. Michaels, doesn't cost Center of Hope anything. I was going to schedule for blood work to be done to see if my PSA count was too high. If the numbers were too high, I would have needed a biopsy done on my prostate. After I received medication for my prostate and anemia and high blood pressure, nothing more was done. I never missed work. Medical treatment should never be denied. Things are harder to go through and endure when in my 60's. I asked someone who had been in the program how many people that they know of that had medical problems that had been refused to be taken to the clinic in Anniston. This person said alot of people. I am letting it be known what I experienced there. I don't care who gets mad.

They pastor at True Faith Baptist Church in Cussetta Alabama, Billie Watts recommended this place for my daughter. She had to leave if she used the phone in the first 30 days and im glad she used the phone to call to leave there. She came in one morning and as soon as they took our money they threw her off to the back. No counselor,no tour, nothing but telling her she will start working in the morning. This place is definitely a cult. I hope it will be looked into at some point. My ex mother in law Sheila Akers thought this was a great idea as well because she wanted to pat herself on the back as well. My daughter was miserable with this place because she already knows Jesus, she needed help with her addiction. Thankfully she got help in Tennessee!! Not at this place.

Center of Hope is a place for drug, alcohol, and life circumstances recovery. Long term care is provided for young and old with a Christ centered approach to all the problems of life. It is a residential program. There are so many ministries within the program but all with same emphasis...recovery. Attend a Sunday worship service at Lighthouse Church in Oxford, Alabama for sample of the dynamics of the Center of Hope's spirit and program.

I graduated from the center July of 2020 though I relapsed a week after graduating which lasted for a month in a half. I loved the staff they all made a meaningful impact on my life and I made life long friends there who also made a positive impact on my life. I learned so much at the center and it brought me closer to God and for all that I am truly grateful if any of the staff read this I love yall miss yall and remember jesus loves yall too

The Center of Hope didn’t just give me tools to manage addiction; it gave me a new identity and purpose in Christ. I wholeheartedly and passionately recommend this program to anyone seeking real, lasting transformation.
